A collaboration between artists Luisa Fernanda Garcia-Gomez and local expert handweaver Bruce Engebretson.
Bruce Engebretson has assembled his Aubusson Loom in our gallery. He is putting on the warp and has begun designing a tapestry based on a piece by Luisa Fernanda Garcia-Gomez.
In this collaborative, interactive project, Luisa Fernanda Garcia-Gomez and our own local expert handweaver, Bruce Engebretson, will explore the rich connective tissue between art, textile design, and tapestry. In early June we will begin by hanging Luisa’s draft textile designs, from which Bruce will select templates for a new tapestry to be woven on his antique Aubusson loom right in our gallery space. As the tapestry takes shape, Luisa will respond with new designs on paper that will be hung in the gallery progressively, all summer long. Visitors to the NAC will be invited to join in on a community tapestry taking shape on the same loom. Luisa will also guide guests to contribute to an interactive wall of artistic expression, rounding out the formation of our "community tapestry".
This project is funded through a Region 2 Arts Council grant, made possible by the voters of Minnesota through legislative appropriation from the Arts And Cultural Heritage Fund.
