Executive Director

Nemeth Art Center
Job Description

The Nemeth Art Center of Park Rapids, Minnesota is seeking a new Executive Director.

The Board of Directors of the Nemeth Art Center is looking for a partner to help us continue to grow our artistic space. “Despite its tiny budget and rural location, the Nemeth is becoming one of Minnesota’s most vibrant contemporary art galleries and gathering spaces.” So went the storyline in a Minneapolis Star Tribune June 2018 article.

Celebrating its 40th anniversary in 2017, the Nemeth Art Center exhibited the entire “Master’s Collection,” which had been purchased by the founding members of the museum from Gabor Nemeth, a local artist. The eclectic collection is comprised of 42 paintings in the style of 16th and 17th Century European Masters, including works by current American artists. This collection served as the cornerstone of the Nemeth, formerly known as the “North Country Museum,” for decades.

The museum is located in the county’s historic courthouse building which provides a unique space for exhibits, performances and contributes to the overall aesthetic experience for visitors. The center’s main gallery, with wood floors worn from courtroom benches and foot traffic, is marked by tall ceilings and windows, and many additional small gallery spaces encircle a grand old staircase.

Over the last five or six years, the Art Center has gradually been moving away from those paintings and focusing on showing contemporary work. In many ways, finding such a contemporary gallery in rural Minnesota is unique and exciting.

This past summer the Nemeth debuted the Second Saturday Happenings, a monthly gathering in the Art Center that showcased local and regional performers including writers, visual artists, musicians, and filmmakers. Over the past few years, we have proudly displayed works by Julia Buffalohead, Wayne Gudmundson, Alexa Horochowski, Christopher Harrison, Kate Casanova, Jim Denomie, Amy Toscani, Gregory Fitz, and many others. We look forward to many more exciting events in our space. And we look forward to meeting you and learning what vision you have for the Nemeth Art Center.

The Executive Director of the Nemeth Art Center assumes control and management of the administrative processes and the operation of the Nemeth Art Center. It is essential that the director brings to the position an ability to adopt broad comprehensive views of the organization’s objective, as well as an ability to establish and implement the necessary steps for the attainment of the objective.

The Executive Director is responsible for the smooth running and successful implementation of the organization’s operations. In addition to these responsibilities, significant effort will need to focus on fundraising and grant writing.

The Executive Director shall coordinate with the Chair of the NAC Board, attend all regular and special meetings of the NAC Board of Directors, keep the Board of Directors informed by timely reports deemed necessary.  The Director will serve as primary contact for information and communications to patrons of the Center, including public relations, website, and social media management. The Director will research grant opportunities and pursue grants as directed by the Board of Directors; develop corporate partners for current and future projects; develop fundraising vehicles for the organization; drive membership development; ensure weekly gallery hours are
covered and be responsible for finance and budget oversight.

This is a part-time position with room to grow through successful fundraising.
