DESCRIPTION:The public is invited to attend the League of Women Voters Park Rapids Area informal informational discussion on the issue of Money in Politics at 9 a.m. Saturday\, Dec. 5 at the Northwoods Bank Community Room. The discussion will start with viewing a slide show and other study materials provided by the LWV United States on the two-year long study about how money shapes our election process.   \n\n\n\nThe League provides these study materials and discussion guides so local leagues can study an issue in depth. After this study\, the local leagues then come to a consensus among their members. This consensus is forwarded to the National League which uses it to build a consensus and form a national policy on a particular issue. \n\n\n\nThe discussion will center around three broad areas:  \n\n1.  the goals of campaign finance regulation in terms of democratic values\,\n\n2.  the extent to which First Amendment protections like free speech and a free press should apply to  various speakers and activities in the campaign finance context\, and \n\n3. the methods of campaign finance regulation.\n\n\n\nCoffee and doughnuts will be served.
