Learn the Skill of Fly Casting! Mini-workshop
Wednesday, June 6, 2018 from 1-3 p.m.
Meet at the Picnic Shelter located near the Lake Itasca Swim Beach.
 
Have you always wanted to try fly casting but never knew how to start? Now you are in luck. Come and join Ron Miller MD as he walks you through fly casting basics. Ron, who has instructed fly fishing and fly casting for over 20 years, will be covering equipment, technique and safety—everything you need to know to start fly casting. Learn about the tools every fly fisher needs, how to find the “best spots” on a lake or stream, and how “match the hatch” when selecting your flies. Plus you’ll be putting the lesson into practice as you learn to use a fly rod. We will then drive to a nearby lake (fly fishing isn’t limited to rivers) to practice fly casting (and maybe catch a fish!) At the right time of year you can catch northern, bass, bluegill, crappie and even walleye using tied flies!
 
TIMELINE:
1-2 p.m.: basics of fly casting: Meet at the Itasca State Park Picnic Shelter for basic instruction and practice casting.
2-3 p.m.:  Fly casting: travel to Lake Ozawindib to practice fly fishing.
 
REGISTRATION: Space is limited to 5 people. Must be 10 or older, children under 16 must be accompanied by an adult. Call 218-699-7251 or email sandra.d.lichter@state.mn.us to register. 
 
WHAT TO BRING: Wear comfortable clothing for the temperatures. Sunscreen, sunglasses, Insect repellant and a hat are useful.  Bring snack and water if you need it for this short outing.
Non-residents of Minnesota will need to have a Minnesota fishing license. Participants will need a car for traveling to Lake Ozawindib.
