Job Description
POSITION TITLE: Family and Domestic Violence Advocate
Family Safety Network is a nonprofit advocacy program that provides support to victims of
domestic violence and their families. Creating awareness about issues of violence and
providing education to our communities, victims, survivors, and their families. We are a
resource for other community agencies and provide opportunity for victims to affirm their
own strengths so that they may realize the full potential and live with dignity.
SUMMARY: Responsible for providing direct support to victims/families in need of crisis
intervention and support services as a result of Intimate Partner Violence. The Advocate
assists victims/families using a trauma informed approach in identifying their needs and
helps the victim coordinate community resources available to resolve the crisis. The
Advocate provides legal advocacy to victims, while maintaining effective working
relationships with members of the court and also with law enforcement.
• Speaks by phone and in person with victims who are in crisis due to intimate partner
violence and abuse.
• Assists victims in identifying their needs, including issues of safety, housing, financial
& medical concerns & makes appropriate referrals.
• Provides each victim a safe, supportive and professional relationship in order to assist
them through their individual situation resulting from intimate partner violence &
• Provide transportation to shelter, court or other locations as needed.
• Facilitate weekly educational support group for victims.
• Assists victims in making a police report or filing for protective orders.
• Accompanies victims to court and provides preparation about court procedures, for
upcoming court hearings.
• Advocates for victims in the legal system through contacts with professionals within
the court and law enforcement system.
• Establishes and maintains contacts within the court and legal system. This may
include contacts with judges, attorneys, prosecutors, court administration staff,
probation officers/agents and law enforcement personnel.
• Assists victims with reparation applications and appropriate follow-up with
associated court cases.

• Maintains a through and current listing of and have knowledge of resources in the
community which may assist victims in crisis situations.
• The Advocate provides suggestions of resources which will best assist victims who
are sorting through their current needs.
• The Advocate assists victims in overcoming barriers that may otherwise prevent
them from reaching their pre-determined goals, in their time of need.
• Fosters relationships with community resource providers so victims can more easily
be referred for effective services and if necessary FSN and fellow service providers
can work in tandem.
• Works with all staff in providing positive public relations and in assuring that the
Mission of Family Safety Network is carried out on a daily basis.
• Attends appropriate training to enhance professional skills.
• Attends staff meetings and other meetings as needed and/or directed.
• Compiles statistical data on caseload as required by the Executive Director, as well as
required by State and Federal regulations.
• Functions as an active member of a small staff (team) by assisting with all other tasks
as needed.
• Works with advocacy based Multi-Disciplinary Teams, Salvation Army and Social
Services as needed. Is a liaison between our agency and partner agencies.
• Other duties as assigned by the Executive Director.
• Bachelor Degree in Human Services, Criminal Justice, Psychology or related fields.
Prefer 3 to 5 years related work or volunteer experience. Or certification from the
Office of Justice Programs as a Crime Victim Advocate.
• Experience /knowledge working with intimate partner violence & abuse issues
• Must adhere to strict confidentiality requirements in all associated Family Safety
Network tasks and activities.
• Must have working knowledge of Microsoft Word, Publisher and Excel.
• Must be able to work with diverse populations.
• Must demonstrate strong sense of professionalism as it relates to clients,
interactions with co-workers & other system professionals.
