Itasca’s Mysteries in History: All Aboard to the Mallard Ghost Town, Car Tour
Monday, July 22, 2019 10 a.m.-Noon
Meet at the Mary Gibbs Mississippi Headwaters Center parking lot (see notes section below)
A logging railroad spur once reached Lake Ozawindib in the early 1900’s. Gigantic red and white pine logs were floated across the lake in spring, loaded onto railroad cars and moved on to the town of Mallard and points beyond. See remnants of this spur during this car tour as we go to the site on Ozawindib Lake where the spur came to the shore. Continue on to the ‘ghost town’ of Mallard 6 miles north of the park, as we learn of the logging days’ boom and bust of this community. Notes: bring your vehicle to the first parking bay on your left at the Mary Gibbs Mississippi Headwaters Center.
